On highway 101 in Northern California in the middle of massive redwood trees, a forest stands a different kind of giant. A five-story high cement and metal statue of Paul Bunyan. Someone sits inside this shell and beckons visitors with a booming voice, animated winks, and weather predictions, becoming Bunyan. Mascots, personas, shells and an unknown sense of self is a recurring thread throughout my practice. Being within a structure, or costume allows for an exploration of my own identity. A persona is a method of escape, providing false confidence, masking a sensation of being lost. The repetitive actions of craft processes allow for an exploration of this sensation, seeking a sense of place.
